About IAYM

Inviting All Young Minds (IAYM) is a one-month summer programme for high school and college level students. The main objective is to encourage students to interactively enjoy the creative use of mathematics.

For full details of this year's programme visit the IAYM 2011 website

Participants work in teams which are mentored by faculty members and post-graduate/research students. They:
  • Work on an application-oriented project in areas such as Image processing, Computer security, Space science, Mathematical biology, Cryptography, etc.
  • Work on a project of Mathematics Communication.
  • Are trained to use mathematical software such as Excel and Matlab.
  • Are exposed on a daily basis to the basic tenets of model building and simulating real world applications.

The first IAYM summer school was conducted in June 2009 and had 72 participants – 36 high school students and 36 university level students from all over India. The programme was hosted by Delhi Public School, R K Puram, which also made available its hostel for the outstation participants as well as facilities such as its mess, computer labs, etc. IAYM 2009 had partial support from the National Council for Science & Technology Communication, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.

The second edition of IAYM was similarly conducted in June 2010 at The Air Force School, Subroto Park, New Delhi. It was sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology (Govt. of India), Mr Narayana Murthy and NIIT.

IAYM 2009 and 2010 have featured student teams working on the Chandrayaan space mission, Rocket science and modelling, the Jantar Mantar observatories, Search engines for images, Face recognition, Encryption, Calculation of the circumference of the Earth, Alternate energy sources, Financial modelling, Genetic pattern recognition, Traffic flow, and Error correcting codes.

One of the outstanding developments of IAYM is the close friendship that developed among the students of different ages and backgrounds, as well as between the students and faculty – especially the junior faculty that resides with the students in the hostel. The students have written about their experiences on their own blogs as well as on networking sites such as Facebook and Orkut. Some idea of the impact of the programme can be gauged from the following student comments:

I can just say it was a 'great' experience... It’s just not maths, but every other subject. In this, rules were reset, myths were broken. S. Monika

Overall it was a great programme and the most memorable month of my life. Gaurav Kataria

My curiosity about various things that otherwise seem normal is aroused, I am inspired and motivated to fulfill my curiosity, I learn to appreciate the world of mathematics... Samudrajit Thapa

I have never done any serious research before this programme and after this experience, believe I am capable of doing research in future. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Natasha Prakash

This initiative taken by MSF is a great one; specially for students who are uncertain about what career to choose. Dipti Kishore

The best thing is that I programmed the whole working of Search Engine for Images single handedly… I am going to resume research in this topic as soon as I return. Subhankar Biswas

Much more learning than expected, especially the high level of Maths and Physics. Doing projects is much more educative since practical knowledge is more useful than bookish knowledge. Aditya Raj Saraogi

A unique programme that helped me a lot in developing research and communication abilities. Syed Athar Parvez

It created the desire to pursue higher and higher knowledge. I developed a certain ability to work with a team, which lacked in me. This programme has aroused my interest in studying mathematics. Prashant Kumar

My experience was simply amazing. The whole structure of the programme was such that we lived it! Agrim Singh
